A Practical System Design Interview Prep Plan

System design interviews reward structured thinking more than trivia. A good prep plan teaches you a repeatable outline, then lets you apply it to a small set of problems until the outline is automatic.

Learn the building blocks before full designs

Cover load balancing, caching, relational vs document storage, queues, and consistency tradeoffs first. If you cannot explain why you would put a cache in front of a database, drawing a box labeled Redis will not help you in the room.

Practice a fixed interview outline

Use the same sequence every time: clarify requirements, estimate scale, sketch the high-level design, deepen one bottleneck, then discuss failures and iteration. Interviewers follow that shape even when they do not announce it.

Pick five canonical problems, not fifty

URL shortener, news feed, chat, file storage, and a rate limiter cover most of the patterns you will be asked to remix. Depth on five beats a shallow tour of every popular prompt.

Time-box design sessions

Work 35–40 minutes with a timer, then spend ten minutes writing what you skipped. The leftover list becomes the next node on your roadmap. Untimed whiteboard sessions hide the pacing problem that actually fails interviews.

Put each design on your visual plan as its own node, with fundamentals upstream. That keeps system design from crowding out coding practice in the final two weeks.
